What If My Music Doesn’t Fit Traditional Country?
Not all country-influenced music is traditional country. That’s fine. Country’s definition has always been fluid. The question is: where’s your audience and how do you reach them authentically?
Define Your Own Category
If your music is country-alternative, Americana, folk-country, or something else, own it. Don’t force yourself into traditional country if you don’t belong there. Find your audience where they are. If your music appeals to indie folk listeners more than country listeners, market it there.
Cross-Genre Appeal
Some of the most successful artists defy easy categorization: Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers, Colter Wall. They’re country-adjacent but attract listeners from multiple genres. Your music’s uniqueness might be its greatest strength. Lean into what makes you different.
