Country music is narrative music. It tells stories. The greatest country songs don’t just express feelings—they show you a character in a situation, making choices, experiencing consequences. Mastering narrative is mastering country music itself.
Show, Don’t Tell
The fundamental rule of storytelling: show action, don’t explain emotion. Instead of “I was sad,” show what you did when you were sad: “I drove past your street every Tuesday for six months.” Instead of “I missed you,” show: “I ordered your favorite coffee by accident and had to leave it on the counter.”
